Candidate for State Senator, District 4
Occupation: Community Organizer / Musician; Age: 36
These are precarious times. Our healthcare system is broken and too expensive. The cost of rent is skyrocketing. Jobs don’t pay enough. Schools are underfunded and college students are submerged in debt. Climate catastrophe threatens our future with drought and fires. Seniors can’t afford retirement. Racism pervades our criminal justice system. And billionaires try to divide us by scapegoating immigrants.
What we need is a powerful working class movement to fight back against right wing corporate interests. My name is Phillip Kim and I am running for State Senate to help build that movement for social and economic justice. More than ever we need to get involved in political organizations and organize around issues like healthcare, housing, and workers’ rights. Our future depends on it.
I support expanded and improved Medicare for All, rent control and public housing, a public jobs guarantee, public internet, immigration reform, free college tuition and full funding for schools, including music, arts, and technical education. We need to ban fracking and rapidly transition to clean energy, end cash bail, institute public banking, and expand Social Security and pensions. And we need a new mass wave of union organizing (watch the movie Sorry to Bother You).
I was a proud union member and shop steward at Thunder Valley Casino for 7 years. I graduated from Cornell University in 2006 with a BA in government. And I’m an active member of the Democratic Socialists of America.
Endorsements: California Labor Federation, California Democratic Party.
