The Real Joy of the Women’s Cricket World Cup Final

I have been very lucky with some of the sporting events that I have been to; England destroying Australia at The MCG on Boxing day 2010, Fabian Cancellara winning back to back Ronde’s, 2012 Olympic Road Race, and watching my beloved Cubs sweeping the Cardinals. On Sunday I was able to witness perhaps one of the best of the lot: The Women’s Cricket World Cup Final at Lords.

The game was an epic, fitting of any final. I have to admit, I thought that victory may have slipped England by, when India were 190–3 while chase 228. Raut and Kaur worked the ball beautifully around the field, while also looking comfortable going over the top and their required run rate was steadily falling.

Despite this, there was always a feeling that it was going to be a very close finish and because England’s bowlers kept their discipline, once one or two wickets fell, they would get their tails up and the win was on! I was very fortunate to get to meet several of the players in the Lords Tavern after the game. They were all delightfully engaging and fun to be around, and of course in very good spirits.

And yet, however good their win was, it couldn’t be the highlight of my day. That came before I had even reached the ground, on the short walk from St John’s Wood Station. Having stopped at the Tesco’s on Circus Road, to get the supplies that a day at the cricket requires, myself and the group of friends that I was with, turned to walk towards the ground. It was then that we passed a young family. To my delight a girl of around 8 or 9 years was windmilling her arms in the air and pretending to bowl a ball, just like I did when I was a sport obsessed little boy!

“Yes!” I mumbled under my breath, restraining myself from punching the air!
