hi! I’m in higher ed as well. I have been in progressively more complex admin work since ~2009 so that might be part of the reason my salary is what it is. That’s also 3 separate jobs, and each come with an increase. Most recently my job was reclassified to senior coordinator and my hours increased from 35–40, which is by far the biggest increase I’ve seen so far (24% annual increase in salary). I definitely don’t think my situation is typical, though I do believe if I was to leave higher ed I’d probably be able to make closer to 100k as an executive assistance at a tech or finance place. My current role also includes more than just straight admin work — I’m also leading some dept workshops and helping my PI with grant progress reports etc.
