The magic of Pinterest happens when you discover something you love that you didn’t even know existed. We call it “building serendipity,” and it’s all powered by world class engineering, making sure the right pin is discovered by the right Pinner at the right time. Today we’re strengthening our ability to connect Pinners to serendipitous Pins and products through the acquisitions of The Hunt and Pext, which include some of the best minds in mobile shopping, advertising and image indexing technologies.

The Hunt

Over the past two years, The Hunt has been building a community-powered service for finding products. The Hunt co-founder and CEO Tim Weingarten, along with some of the core product team, bring significant experience building mobile shopping and discovery products that are a welcomed addition to Pinterest as we continue to build a discovery engine to help people discover, save and buy the things they love. Pext

Pext is an app by OMG Labs that turns text messages into memes by helping users instantly discover images relevant to their messages. Pext co-founder Harsh Goel joins Pinterest with extensive experience building image indexing and advertising technologies, mobile apps and discovery products. Welcome, Pext!

Looking ahead

As more than 100 million people use Pinterest to plan their everyday lives, we have a unique opportunity to help Pinners discover the ideas and products that matter to them — from a home remodel to the latest styles to gift ideas. With 75 percent of all content saved on Pinterest originating from a business’ website (retailers, publishers, etc.), brands are an essential part of the discovery process. Whether it’s a Promoted Pin or a Buyable Pin we believe these can be as interesting and relevant as the billions of organic Pins on the platform. With the addition of core members of The Hunt and Pext product teams, we can better tackle significant challenges and opportunities in commerce and monetization engineering.
