What is the difference between Brand, Marketing, Public Relations and Advertising? I often get asked this question, so I created a quick and easy to understand overview for you.

  • Advertising = Attempt to influence an audience by screaming at anyone who is willing to listen. Brief and repeated communication (e.g. web-banners, billboards).
  • Marketing = Direct information, targeting a specific group of people (e.g. a website or brochure).
  • Public Relations (PR) = Attempt to influence the consumer by targeting their influencers (e.g. Youtubers, magazines, friends or family).
  • Brand = What is the message you are trying to convey using the mechanisms described in the three points above. Who are you and why do you matter.
  • Brand Strategy = Thought process you go through to ensure your advertising, marketing and PR are synchronised around one common concept.
