From Film to Tech: Why I Made the Transition from Selling Movies to Digital Marketing.
In 2016, I decided to start my own business. I was living in London at the time, had just lost my job, and was frantically trying to find direction in my career. One night I was at a networking event, and ended up missing out on a job opportunity because the woman I was speaking to had run out of business cards. I had of course forgotten her name at that point, but it was too late in the conversation to ask her to repeat what her name was. Opportunity missed.
The next day, I thought to myself, why do we still rely on exchanging business cards when we live in such a digital era? Why hasn’t something been done to digitize and streamline the exchange of contact information? It became my mission to make sure this would never happen again because I was sure I wasn’t the only person this had ever happened to! We all have our phones on us pretty much all the time, so I thought why not create an app that could track your activity and allow you to automatically and digitally exchange contact information with people you’ve been around?

In a matter of months, I went from seasoned director of international film sales to tech entrepreneur, embarking on a mission to create a new networking technology. It was a huge undertaking, but I have never been one to shy away from a challenge! (Photo courtesy of Pixabay.com)
As a new CEO and Founder of a tech startup, I realized that one of the most important elements to the success of my app was marketing. But how could I market this new app when I didn’t have an elaborate marketing budget? That’s when I decided to look into digital marketing. The opportunities for digital marketing are endless, and often even free! Exactly what I need to get the word out there for minimal cost. My knowledge of digital marketing, however, is pretty basic, so I realized I needed to brush up on the topic. When searching for online digital marketing courses, Udacity came up as a well-established education organization, and the timing of this course was perfect. I enrolled at the urging of a close friend, and I’m so glad I did!
