We are so attached to our intellectual detachment, “art for art’s sake”, and interpretive objectivity that we have failed to say anything of value to our audiences. The only people who appreciate the collections are the people who already know more than average about them. We’re so afraid of turning some people off, that we’ve failed to turn anybody on. People don’t see a repository of history and human knowledge/creativity. They see a room full of stuff because that’s all we show them.
