Contrary to AAP promise, 40% of Delhi population without water supply
“Arvind Kejriwal’s manifesto promised a water pipeline to every home in Delhi. One year down the line, around 40% of Delhi’s population lives in water deprived colonies, whether these be slums or unauthorised colonies, all of which are presently making do with private tankers.”

In the run-up to Delhi election, Arvind Kejriwal promised to install metered water connection in every home and a network of water pipeline was to be laid in Delhi. After one year of Kejriwal’s government, very few water pipelines have been laid; and large parts of Delhi still wait for water to be made available through tankers. Around 40% of Delhi’s citizens still do not have water connections.
Cover-up to stroppy promise
Immediately after taking charge of the Delhi government, Kejriwal laid emphasis on unauthorized colonies and slums and Delhi government started supplying water thorough tankers in the areas where pipelines had not been laid out. It was promised that till the time they get metered connection, Delhi government would supply water tanker. But unfortunately, citizen’s delight was very short lived and water tankers from government didn’t not serve them for more than a month.
Now, it has been a year since Kejriwal became CM of Delhi and there seems no headway in that. Majority of the unauthorized colonies and jhuggi-jhopri in Delhi are still not getting water supply.
Other promises undelivered
Arvind Kejriwal in his manifesto had given lot of weightage on water supply and sanitation and made huge promises. However, most of these promises are far from reality. Some of the promises, which are not delivered, are:
- A network of Piaos (water kiosks) was to be set up in Jhuggi-jhopri to meet the drinking water requirements of the people; however, Delhi government didn’t bother to pay heed to this promise after reigning power
- The party promised to implement a dual water distribution system to recycle community waste water for non-domestic use. This was to be implemented in housing societies, commercial complexes, malls, etc. However, no announcements have been made in this regard.
- The manifesto also promised that the government would build underground water reservoirs, booster pumping stations and water treatment plants. So far, Delhi government ahs not initiated anything in this direction
Aam Adam Party perhaps believes in the philosophy of promising moon and delivering nothing! Clean drinking water is the basic necessity of every citizen and AAP was able to strike a chord with Delhi voters in wake of populist promises made. One year later after government formation, AAP has proved it that these were only fake promises to lure voters.
