That’s nicely put but doesn’t it amount to giving in to the trolls and the hijackers? No matter how you phrase it, Al Jazeera is admitting defeat.

Other newspapers have succeeded though at maintaining a relatively clean and healthy comment section. Yet, to expect those places to be a «platform for our audience to debate the issues that matter the most to them» might be delusional. Comment sections are rarely a place for debate, and same goes for social media.

There’s a middle point between debate and hate speech, and that’s where the comment sections of generalist news websites should aim.
