Factory workers (yes, the workers of those “good” manufacturing jobs) still largely need help because they, too, are working at just around the minimum wage.

Boy did you ever hit the nail on the head with this one! It doesn’t really matter anymore whether you work at flipping burgers or work in a factory your both at essentially the same level. Some manufacturing jobs do have some benefits such as health insurance (usually share the costs these days) and retirement funds such as 401K’s that match up to 5% or so. It doesn’t take them much higher than the flipping burgers level though.
