4 books that have helped me during difficult times

As an introvert and someone that loves to read, when I am going through difficult times, books really help me to centre my thoughts, reframe my feelings and devise a plan of how I’m going to improve my situation. I have compiled a list of 4 books that have helped me through some tough times!

  1. The 4 Agreements by don Miguel Ruiz — This book really helps you put your life into perspective. He shares how 4 basic principles can help you to tackle any obstacles in your life. My favourite agreement is “Do not take anything personally”. When you accept people’s opinions and actions are a reflection of their reality and not yours, life becomes a lot easier. I’m still working on fully accepting this principle!
  2. Mindset: How You Can Fulfil Your Potential by Dr Carol Dweck — If you want to understand the power of how your thinking can either propel your life forward or keep you stuck in a negative cycle, this book is for you.
  3. As a Man Thinketh by James Allen — This book is definitely a page-turner, the amount of common sense and practical advice will motivate you. One of my favourite quotes in the book is “There is no room for a complainer in a universe of law, and worry is soul suicide”. You will finish this book, empowered and ready to take on the world!
  4. No Disrespect by Sister Souljah — Her openness and vulnerability in this book were refreshing. It made me realise, I wasn’t the only one that had made mistakes whether it was bad friendships or relationships. As a young woman, we place so much pressure on yourselves to be perfect after reading this book, it showed me that your missteps don’t define you.
