Field Trip

Yesterday, I took a “field trip” to the State’s Dept. of Agriculture. It was a sad sight to see. It’s unfortunate that government funded departments have to work in the “slums” of office buildings. But anyway! I went.

I was skeptical, at first, because I met the guy on the train while I was headed to work. He randomly struck up a conversation about my tattoo. Which under other circumstances would be considered a pick-up line. But not that day. He used my tattoo to segway into a discussion about how the British enslaved the Indians (not Native Americans) for years. This, of course, lead to a conversation about politics, war, US allies and ending with self-sufficiency and sustainability.

After he found out that I wasn't some shallow hipster, he offered to give me a tour of the Dept. of Agriculture. I thought of this as a sign, since just a few weeks ago, I vowed to live a life of self-sufficiency. Hopefully, encouraging others to do the same. One day, I’ll get into detail about how my friends damn near laughed in my face when I told them about my dreams of living off the grid.

So, I went on the tour and had an amazing time. We spoke about the farmer’s markets in the city and how I can get involved. He gave me literature on just about everything I would need to open my own farmer’s market. He even encouraged me to “fudge my resume” a little so that I could get a job in the agriculture industry. It was awesome!

The thing is, I couldn't shake the feeling that he may have had ulterior motives. Feelings, like, he wanted to make me his concubine. I giggle as I write this because I know better than anyone else how vivid my imagination can get. But either way, what I dreamed, wished, and hoped for is being presented to me and I would be foolish not to see where this path will lead.

It is my pleasure to introduce to you my journey to self-sufficiency.
