In October 2017, we received information that former Prime member Christian Rodriguez allegedly used his influence as a respected photographer to pressure a woman into participating in a nude photo shoot. After speaking with her we decided unanimously that Rodriguez should be expelled from Prime effective November 15, 2017.
Over the last several days, we have learned of more allegations against Rodriguez — many following similar patterns of alleged abusive behavior. To date, approximately 32 women have come forward to share their stories [Link]. The alleged incidents range from years ago to recent weeks.
Prime stands with, supports, and commends the women that are bravely speaking out about their experiences with Christian Rodriguez. While Prime is not an employer, we, as a collective of photographers who once uplifted Rodriguez and his work, regret that our association with him may have increased his perceived stature in the photo community, and contributed to his access to women in the industry. In light of these alarming new disclosures, we also now regret that we did not further publicize Rodriguez’s expulsion when it occurred.
Prime is firmly committed to providing a safe environment for women in our organization, the photo community, and the world at large. We have no tolerance for predatory, exploitative, abusive, sexist or discriminatory behavior of any kind.
Photography is a male-dominated profession with a culture and power structure that excludes minorities and women. Navigating and enduring exploitative and predatory behavior is an ever-present reality for female photographers, normalized as an unspoken “part of the job,” particularly for young women new to the industry. Thankfully, this is being challenged, mostly because of brave women speaking out. It is time for everyone, especially men, to join them. To all of the photo industry, ourselves included — we need to do better.

Comunicado sobre exmiembro Christian Rodriguez
En octubre de 2017 el colectivo Prime recibió información de que su miembro Christian Rodríguez presuntamente utilizó su posición como fotógrafo para presionar a una mujer a participar en una sesión al desnudo. Después de hablar con ella tomamos la decisión unánime de expulsar a Rodríguez de Prime el 15 de noviembre de 2017.
En los últimos días han surgido más acusaciones contra Rodríguez; muchas de ellas describen patrones similares de presunto comportamiento abusivo. A la fecha de hoy, alrededor de 32 mujeres han compartido sus experiencias [Link]. Los presuntos incidentes abarcan desde años atrás hasta hace algunas semanas.
Prime apoya y se solidariza con las mujeres que de forma valiente han hablado sobre sus experiencias con Christian Rodríguez. Si bien Prime no es un empleador, nosotros, como un colectivo de fotógrafos que en su momento sostuvimos a Rodríguez y a su trabajo, lamentamos que nuestra asociación con él haya incrementado su aparente estatus en la comunidad fotográfica, y le haya facilitado el acceso a mujeres en la industria. A partir de estas nuevas revelaciones, también reconocemos que debimos haberle dado mayor difusión a nuestra decisión de expulsar a Rodríguez en noviembre.
Prime está comprometido con ofrecer y garantizar entornos seguros para las mujeres en nuestra organización, en la comunidad fotográfica y el mundo en general. No toleramos comportamiento predatorio, explotador, abusivo, sexista o discriminatorio de ninguna índole.
La industria fotográfica está actualmente dominada por hombres, con una cultura y estructura de poder que excluyen a minorías y mujeres. Lidiar con la explotación y el acoso es una realidad para las fotógrafas, normalizada como una condición tácita que es “parte del trabajo”, particularmente para mujeres jóvenes empezando su carrera.
