I wish Past Me would have been smart enough to look for helpful articles like this back when she was first starting out. Instead, she did it the hardest, least efficient way she could think of ^^
My first contact with coding was a limited version of C++ utilised by Neverwinter Nights’ modding tools. The way I learned it was by taking apart existing scripts and other modders’ work, observing working examples, looking at their source code, figuring out how it worked and trying to reverse-engineer it into my own scripts.
Not the cleanest or easiest way to go but… it was fun. And back then I was doing it for fun, not even thinking about it in terms of career or even something I’d still be doing years later. But fast-forward years later, I’m still doing it! For some reason coding makes me happy, when everything starts executing it’s like watching magic come to life!
Until recently I was still only interested in modding but the past couple of months made me realise that there were career possibilities all around me that somehow had never even registered in my reality before. I guess I can blame Women Who Code for that a little bit, learning of its existence and seeing members sharing advice and supporting each other was a huge confidence boost. If I decide to go through with the career change, I’ll definitely use the resources you recommended and I’m looking forward to more! Thank you!
