The Importance of Thanking People #edchat

We tried something new this year. Admittedly it was something that we should have been doing for a long time. The concept was that we wanted a way to recognize educators in our individual schools for their hard work and we wanted it to be simple and special all at the same time. So, we created something called the Superintendent’s Excellence in Education Award. With that came some criteria for said awesomeness, but you get the idea.

Principals were asked to nominate a member of their staff (remember this is the first time we’re doing this) and write a letter sharing why they thought these folks should be recognized. As you might expect people took it very seriously and wrote amazing stories about their educators.

Then we created the video above. There are a couple of things to note about the video:

  • It’s fun and informal. I personally believe in the importance of showing ourselves as real, fun and heartfelt
  • No one knew that they were nominated beforehand. So when we showed this video at our convocation event it was a surprise for everyone…and they seemed to love that!

And maybe I’m a little biased, but when the crowd was watching and waiting to see who was nominated from their school…and there was this quiet tension of wonder…and then cheers and claps…well…I thought that was kind of great.
