It is essential that any court is maintained if it is to last for the specified time period and a tennis court is of no exception. If a court is being used regularly and especially by budding champions, it is all the more important that it receives the attention it requires to keep it in tip top condition. Tennis courts that are not maintained to the highest standards can lead to poor performance, which in turn can cause a great deal of frustration for those who are simply trying to train or enjoy a game.

A well cared for and maintained court will offer years of safe and trouble free play, but it is up to the owner to develop and implement a regular schedule of maintenance. As you may expect, regular inspection and general upkeep of a tennis court is more cost effective than letting it get in total disrepair and having to splash out for a whole new surface.

Here are some great tips on how to maintain a tennis court that is fit for budding Wimbledon Champions:

Keep it clean — The surface should be kept clean which means the blowing of leaves should be carried out regularly and any debris should be removed. This includes: leaves, litter, twigs, bird droppings and pine needles. If any of these are left on a court and ground in, the surface will deteriorate earlier than is expected.

Ways to keep it clean are by:

Cleaning it with a mild house-hold detergent once a month thoroughly so that any stains, mould or mildew are removed will prevent the dirt from building up but if there are tougher stains to remove you may have to look for a professional court cleaning company who will be able to maintain your surface correctly and carefully. If you want to have a go at removing tougher stains by yourself, you could use something called “Tri-Sodium Phosphate” or a diluted bleach solution. The one thing not to use on a tennis court is anything that contains abrasives as they will damage the finish. Once you have cleaned the court yourself, you must make sure you have rinsed and washed it down thoroughly so that no detergents or cleaning fluids are left on the court as they will get trodden in as the surface is played on.

Keep it dry — It is always difficult to keep tennis courts dry, but to ensure the life of the court is prolonged it is essential that the court is dried thoroughly before use and water should certainly not be allowed to puddle on the surface. One thing to look out for when keeping the court dry is over-irrigation. Be careful that this does not happen.

To make sure that your court is getting the proper care and attention that it needs, we would always advise you to approach a company like ourselves who can offer many different forms of maintenance packages; plus we can give tips and advice on how to care for your court in the meantime.
