Reinventing the Event Ticket

Problematic event ticket

The current physical event tickets are broken. Whether it be a concert, sporting event, or festival, physical event tickets are bulky and filled with data the event-goer doesn’t need, while failing to provide information the event-goer does need. It’s time to re-design the event ticket in a way that is beautiful, filled with useful information, and convenient in size.

I was faced with this problem recently while purchasing a concert ticket. The printed ticket was much larger than a credit card, and therefore did not fit in my wallet. This led to anxiety about forgetting to put the ticket in my pocket before leaving the house. When I did remember, the ticket was so large that it stuck out of my pocket, which led to me worrying about losing the ticket before I arrived at the venue. It also had little useful information. Where can I park? Where are the entrances to the venue? What does the layout of the venue look like? Due to the aforementioned issues, I came up with a better event ticket that I believe will be beneficial to all parties (event-goer, venue, performer):

Proposed event ticket for a soccer game
  1. Consistently and appropriately sized. Event tickets should be printed on business cards. This enables ticket purchasers to place the card directly in their wallet or pocket, without having to worry about forgetting the ticket or it falling/sticking out of your pocket.
  2. Collectible. Business card event tickets also make them more collectible. There are many physical business card holders, cases, and displays that can be used. Increasing the beauty of the ticket will also make them more collectible and instill a sense of pride.
  3. Informational. Have you ever ran around the entirety of the stadium trying to find your seat? This proposed layout would help to alleviate that with pictures of the stadium (with your section highlighted), and an enlarged sectional display that shows where in the section your seats are. Also included is a map to the stadium. Alternatively, a parking lot map along with stadium position to help guide event-goers could be placed on the ticket.
  4. Seller information. Even though business cards are small, you can still pack information such as bar codes onto the card without compromising the look and feel of the ticket.

I don’t believe it would take much to improve the current event ticket. In doing so, you could also greatly enhance the event-goer’s experience before, during, and after the event.
