I’m not happy with the idea that everybody getting a computer science degree is going to usher in a Golden Age. There is always going to be a need for people to pick up the garbage, and we already have far too many people with degrees and advanced degrees and doctorates doing jobs that don’t, really, require a high school diploma. Also, specifying computer science seems like the case of the generals who always expect to fight the next war, so this time they’re gonna be ready, by golly. Investment bankers mostly get their jobs through family connections, not because they’re well educated or smart. Bill Gates and Steve Jobs were college dropouts. The story that people are making more in a year than Lichtenstein because they have extra education doesn’t pass the smell test. Sheldon Adelson is a college dropout. He got his start by organizing COMDEX, a computer trade show, but he’s not a technology genius. His talent seems to be finding and somehow connecting with people who have power, mafia and triad gangsters. The whole theory of the shift in income distribution being due to technology and education does not make sense if you look at the world most people live in.
