Project: Pigeon Integrates Chainlink VRF to Help Power Secure and Reliable NFT Minting

We are excited to announce that Project: Pigeon — a group-to-watch creating an ecosystem of phy-gital (physical and digital) games and game-agnostic NFTs — has integrated Chainlink Verifiable Random Function (VRF) on Polygon mainnet. By integrating the industry-leading decentralized oracle network, we now have access to a tamper-proof and auditable source of randomness needed to help fairly generate NFTs, saving us from having to worry about developing this technology ourselves and enabling us to have a faster go-to-market time. Project: Pigeon chose Chainlink VRF to help enable a more exciting and transparent user experience, and help ensure users that NFT mint tranches are deployed without the possibility of rarity sniping.

Project: Pigeon’s NFT gaming ecosystem nests on the Polygon network. The team’s inaugural collections — Pigeons and Eggs — include minigames with Play-To-Earn (P2E) applications. The VIVE token can be used to purchase Pre-Release (“Early Supporter”) Booster Packs, and, in the future, grant game-agnostic NFTs and other innovative high-value offerings.

Project: Pigeon reports that NFT-enabled use cases are in late-stage production, including a “tower defense” game (NFTs will work as upgrades) and a Trading Card game (NFTs will be transformed into playable cards). The team has shared their robust road map, which includes blockchain-enabled digital real estate and commodity trade applications.

Project: Pigeon chose Chainlink VRF because it’s based on cutting-edge academic research, supported by a time-tested oracle network, and secured through the generation and on-chain verification of cryptographic proofs that prove the integrity of each random number supplied to smart contracts.

In order to help create our generative NFTs, we need access to a secure random number generator (RNG) that any user could independently audit. RNG solutions for smart contracts require several security considerations to prevent manipulation and ensure system integrity. As an example, RNG solutions derived from blockchain data like block hashes can be exploited by miners/validators, while off-chain RNG solutions derived from off-chain APIs are opaque and don’t provide users with definitive proof about the integrity of the process.

Chainlink VRF works by combining block data that is still unknown when the request is made with the oracle node’s pre-committed private key to generate both a random number and a cryptographic proof. The Project: Pigeon smart contract will only accept the random number input if it has a valid cryptographic proof, and the cryptographic proof can only be generated if the VRF process is tamper-proof. This provides our users with automated and verifiable assurances directly on-chain that our Egg and Booster Packs are not tampered with.

Beyond the current integration, Project: Pigeon is also actively looking into leveraging other Chainlink services such as Chainlink Keepers to support the automation of large-scale NFT distributions and token vesting. Chainlink’s blockchain-agnostic architecture also supports Project: Pigeon’s seamless expansion to other blockchains in the future.
