The Potential Within a VR Metaverse
Virtual Reality (VR) can enable various online experiences, including virtual events and games, which can integrate blockchain technology or embedded financial systems. However, many of these applications are no longer just a pipe dream.
Like many others, we are exploring various VR metaverse opportunities, to add as a key element within our ecosystem.
This article will summarise some of the current utilities and integrations, and help introduce some upcoming concepts.
Bringing NFT Projects to Life:
Projects with 3D models are able to seamlessly integrate into our Unity platform. If models are correctly rigged, they can even include walking or other movement animations.
A few weeks ago we were able to bring the NFT Project ‘The Squibbles’ to (virtual) life. This was the first time that their creator, Jay, was able to hold and interact with the 3D collection. We have since discussed the additional capabilities and potential that can be found within our environment.
Virtual Events:
With global businesses and projects highlighting upcoming virtual events (such as concerts and art galleries), we wanted to create our own environments to explore how to appropriately set up a virtual event.
One such example can be seen below through an infographic our team created.
Indeed, virtual presentations, seminars or similar events are possible to conduct within virtual environments, and can be set up rather easily.
These events can also include embedded purchasing opportunities, similar to those seen in Pigeon Island. Early stage versions of this can include interacting with an NFT to view its OpenSea page, but later developments will allow for purchasing directly within the virtual environment, thanks to wallet integrations. This integration will make events such as virtual galleries or art sales feel like a more seamless experience.
Custom Metaverse Land
Offering individual spaces of land to consumers is a common practice within metaverse environments, but not all are customisable.
Our Level Editor, while initially used for Tower Defence map building, has also evolved into a platform where people can create their own virtual environments (all VR environments we are currently using are built through the same editor).
By offering private land and resources to build via NFTs, users will be able to create their own environments, exactly how they want (show us those Minecraft skills!).
Community Interactions and Accessibility:
As VR headset adoption is not common right now, we’ve looked into ways of bringing these virtual experiences to our community at large.
Our lead developer has done a great job at linking our VR environment to a Twitch chat, letting users display images and ask questions through the platform, which appear directly in our VR environment. By then streaming that environment, we can create an effective two-way communication channel for those without a headset.
In a similar vein, we are developing an AR mobile experience which allows you to view and move within a VR environment through your phone. You can also talk directly with those in VR through shared voice channels!
We plan on utilising these features in upcoming VR AMAs or other events.
Final Thoughts:
The metaverse is one of the most competitive aspects of Web3 as of right now, with many NFT projects and global companies alike trying to get involved.
Platforms which offer customizability, utility and cross-platform communications will be at a competitive advantage, compared to more limited experiences.
The metaverse space is still incredibly early; new and powerful use cases can arrive at a moments notice (this article, and future updates, will be updated to reflect this).
