Spotify’s 2015 Year in Music

Every year Spotify tells us what the most listened to artists, albums and tracks are. They do it personalised for each of us, and overall for everyone. It’s great (and terrifying) to get this summary of our listening habits, individually and collectively. The personalised one can reveal some genuine surprises, which tells us clearly we have know idea what we listen to. But here are some highlights from Spotify’s Global Year in Music.

We do sincerely recommend you do yours, it’s pretty interesting and great. The photo and this link will take you straight there.

Highlights

There’s no doubt about it that some artists have simply outdone others on a global scale. We’re of course missing pop darlings Adele & Taylor Swift from all lists, on account of them not being on Spotify.

Drake

Drake released two albums and a single in 2015, What A Time To Be Alive, If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late and Hotline Bling. His efforts scored him the #1 spot as Spotify’s Top Artist, and the #2 spot for Top Albums for If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late.

Major Lazer

Major Lazer dominated the spring and summer months with the major hit Lean On (feat. MØ & DJ Snake) and in November became the most streamed song on Spotify of all time. Clearly they secured the #1 title of Top Track in 2015, and their album was #3 in the Top Albums category.

The Weeknd

The Weeknd had a fantastic year, with #1 Top Album on Spotify. They also rank as #3 Top Artist, and hold the spots for the #10 and #11 most played songs of the year.

Honourable Mentions

50 Shades of Grey Soundtrack

Although not specified, we want to give a nod to some impressive achievements. First is the 50 Shades of Grey soundtrack which has two tracks on the Global Top 11 most played tracks on Spotify. That must be some kind of a record for a film soundtrack (but don’t quote us on that).

Kanye West

Kanye West scored #5 as Spotify’s Top Artist. What makes this interesting is that his last album that’s on Spotify came out in 2013. The only Spotify release this year, was the FourFiveSeconds single with Rihanna & Paul McCartney which has amassed over 250 million streams on Spotify. It is of the album SWISH which comes out… it’s complicated. We wonder if there’s anything or anyone(s) helping maintain his popularity.

Over One Billion Streams

Spotify also now has multiple artists who’ve become a part of the exclusive Nine Zero Heroes club, which means they’ve totaled over a billion stream! Here’s the playlist Spotify created in their honour. All artists who have achieved this milestone deserve a special kudos. So kudos!
