Some of you already know me, but those of you who don’t, I’m Mocha and I’m unapologetic about it.
“Mocha? What does that mean?” you might be asking. Let me answer this with a story.
When I was in my early 20s, I had a boss that didn’t really like women or people of color. So, considering I was both, you can imagine we didn’t get along very well. (Read: He was a vile, disgusting excuse of a human being and he missed no opportunity to try and humiliate me.)
One day we were the only two in the store. He decided this would be a good time to “find out how rough black bitches liked it.”
He found out two things:
- I give an exceptionally accurate knee to the groin followed by an equally accurate left hook to the jaw.
- My words to him as he writhed on the ground in the fetal position: “I’m not a “black bitch.” I’m mocha. I might be bitchy, but the only bitch I see is the one rolling around on the floor.”
Anyway, skip ahead a couple of decades and here we are. We live in a time where being a person of color is a challenge. Being a woman is a challenge. Show too much pride and a large group of people feel threatened and seek ways to silence you. Show no pride and you and your race or gender languishes because their lives matter to know one else. Well, if I have to choose between pride or languishing, I choose pride.
Thus Unapologetically Mocha. I’m a proud, mocha colored woman who is ready to fight inequality in all forms; race, gender, sexual orientation, business, politics…if someone is being treated unfairly, I’m going to point it out. Because when one of us is being mistreated, we’re ALL being mistreated.
So, why the moniker and the avatar instead of my real name and my real photo? Because I like the avatar and I like the name. Believe me, anyone who really wants to know who I am will not have to dig too deep (those that don’t already know anyway).
When I’m not railing against injustice, I’m working on one of my myriad writing projects, designing jewelry, working with a local organization to improve lives in my community or spending time with my family. I’m also a HUGE YUGE fan of all things James Corden and Lin-Manuel Miranda. They will be common topics. The fact that I’ve written this entire post and didn’t once make a Hamilton reference is pretty amazing. (You’ll see. :-))
I’ve got a list of topics queued up and ready to go, but if you’ve got something you want me to address specifically, shoot me an email firstname.lastname@example.org or tweet at me Unapologetically Mocha.
Catch y’all on the flip side. Be good to each other!
