Imagine a Jewish family moves into a new neighborhood and plans to take their children to the park down the road. In the center of the park is a statue of a young Nazi soldier with his name on the plaque. This statue could have feasibly been erected with good intentions and with no ill will in mind, but every Jewish family who wants to go out for a picnic has to look at it or purposefully avoid it. Now imagine a family of African Americans moving into a new neighborhood and it’s a statue of a confederate soldier instead.

Whether or not the statues are legitimately glorifying a shameful part of American history is one matter, but they do represent that history in some way.
