This is what INTPs are about

INTPs are a personality type within the 16 MBTI types.

First we have to talk about the other types. One can be either a thinker or a feeler, an introvert or an introvert, intuition or sensor, or a judger or a perceiver. An INTP has the traits Introvert, Intuition, Thinking, and Perceiving, as opposed to Extrovert, Sensing, Feeling, and Judging. They are pretty rare, especially among women.

Basically, as Introverts they prefer to be and work alone (or around a close group of friends), as having Intuition they work in short bursts of energy and focus on big ideas instead of details (and a focus on the future), as thinkers they value thinking (objectivity) over feeling (subjectivity), and as perceivers they prefer to be unstructured and to keep options open (to adapt to change) and are good at adapting to fit in. How does this reflect in the way they act and view the world however?

The most dominant trait they have is thinking, and they’re also introverts, so they think in an introverted way. They sort of live in their own heads in a way, and try to solve problems in a logical way. They are the ultimate problem solvers, always looking for new ways to improve something, and always looking at the wrongs of a concept before the rights. They are always seeking new information and a clearer understanding of things, so they can help society improve as well. They always try to come up with a new theory or replace in old one. They approach everything with the upmost skepticism and will usually be inclined to disagree with popular opinions. Because they’re always interested in the wrongs and rights of other’s theories and their own, they will often get into arguments, not to prove their right, but to see if the other person can prove them wrong. Just because an INTP argues for something, it doesn’t mean that’s what they believe, and don’t take it personally.

Because of their perceiving nature, they’re don’t like putting boundaries on others and prefer not to lead or control others (they also don’t like to be controlled themselves). They do have an exception to this though, and that’s when one of an INTP’s core principals is crossed, and that’s when they go up in arms and will become quite rigid on whatever issue that may be.

One of their major differences from others is their lack of understanding for emotions. They usually feel very little emotional and have a hard time understanding it, and put very little credibility on subjectivity and arguments and actions based on emotion. This makes it very hard for them to empathize or attend to other’s feelings, and makes them seem rather cold or harsh. They view truth as an absolute concept. There may be a 20% chance of something happening, but if it happens, it happens, and no 2 things can happen at once. They are very caught up on presenting truth accurately, and will often correct people on the minutest of mistakes they have made, even if it may seem trivial.

Finally, there is something INTPs do that may seem random. They often get caught up on their “one thing” and make it the center of their being. They can focus on other things, but the reason they get up every day is that one thing and anything that isn’t that thing can get tossed aside easily if necessary. This can often be confused as addiction, but INTPs can easily lose that thing in exchange for something else without any sort of withdrawal.

In conclusion:

“The INTP is usually very independent, unconventional, and original. They are not likely to place much value on traditional goals such as popularity and security. They usually have complex characters, and may tend to be restless and temperamental. They are strongly ingenious, and have unconventional thought patterns which allows them to analyze ideas in new ways. Consequently, a lot of scientific breakthroughs in the world have been made by the INTP.

The INTP is at his best when he can work on his theories independently. When given an environment which supports his creative genius and possible eccentricity, the INTP can accomplish truly remarkable things. These are the pioneers of new thoughts in our society.”
