With the economic meltdown in the past 2 years, everyone’s super conscious of their spending habits in Nigeria. Everyone’s constantly seeking ways to save money without having to sacrifice or change their lifestyle.

Shopping on a budget means you’ve calculated ahead what your spending limits are, and overspending on your limits only means you’re eating into a different budget. Knowing this, you’d want to ponder on whether your overspend is really really worth it.

5 things to Consider on budgeting

Plan Ahead

Deciding how much you have to spend on shopping would mean you need to take into account how much income you make, your income allocation for essentials such as housing/rent and utilities.

Creating a priority list on the must haves and nice to haves would help you figure out how much you have left to splurge on a shopping spree. At most, avoid impulse buying as this may eat into your tight budget.

Pay with Card

Contrary to other countries, paying with card in Nigeria limits the amount you may have to spend. The temptation to buy more is higher when you have cash in your possession as it’s an easy purchase. You may find yourself constantly looking for what to buy when there’s cash in hand. This will eventually lead to you spending above your budget.

Buying Extras

If you’re operating on a shoestring budget, the best way to buy extras is to save ahead. Saving upfront would require you to put away small amounts each month so you wouldn’t have to deal with a credit card bill or be in debt to someone.

Shop Online

Shopping online avails you with not only convenience, but also choices you probably wouldn’t be open to if at an open market.

#FunFact: sometimes, you can find your favorite brands online for far less the amount of the same products at a brick and mortar store. Just be sure to factor in the shipping cost.

Take advantage of Coupons/redeem codes and sales

Don’t be a lazy bum. Many retailers have hundreds of coupon codes all made available for your redemption online. Take advantage of all of them, it doesn’t make you a cheapskate.
