Underwear Symbolism

Adventures of a quarter life gal

So underwear have meaning right? Certain underwear give us luck. We wore those for this moment. We were wearing those when that happened. I was wearing those when that happened.

I was realizing this when I was drying my underwear. I think that’s a girl thing—hang drying your underwear—well only your lacy underwear. Well maybe that is just me.

Anyways… I was hang drying my underwear and came across this one pair and then…it all came back to me. At that moment, I realized, I have to throw these away. I will always think of that one moment. I will always think of that time. And if I am trying to forget that time, those underwear will not let me forget. So. I throw away a perfectly good pair of underwear? Seems wasteful. But if I want to forget, I have to get rid of them, right?

And I kept them. They’re drying as we speak. They still don’t have a safe home. Do you think they know that they might have to leave soon? Maybe go to a different home? I gave them a great home; I like to think my underwear drawer is a nice home. Wooden, clean, with a drawer liner. Now they will live at goodwill, if I am good. If I am bad, they ll live in the trash. Well that’s harsh. Okay, I love them. They are cute. A nice pair to keep around for fun times, probably not for everyday.

But I have to get rid of them, right? Who can keep them around? So they have to go to goodwill. I like them too much.

The truth is, for me at least, underwear holds meaning. We, as in humans, connect things we wear, sounds we hear, scents we smell, to moments we experience. Usually, we commit these scences to memory becasue we want to remember them for many years. But you can’t turn it off. Moments happen where we no longer want an everyday or every week reminder. Moments like the underwear you were wearing when you were wearing only your underwear next to the wrong person at the wrong time.

So they have to go. You can find my memory in a bin at goodwill.
