How to explain content marketing to your boss

Content marketing is all the rage these days. In fact, job listings containing the words “content marketing” grew by 350% between January 2011 and January 2015. But surprisingly, a lot of people — including those hiring for these positions — actually have no idea what it means to ‘do’ content marketing or be a content marketer.

We asked John Collins, Intercom’s managing editor, “What is content marketing, really?

John told us that content marketing is:

Any kind of editorial produced by a business which serves a business purpose.

What about a business whose business is producing content, such as The New York Times or Buzzfeed? John says that based on his definition of content marketing, this type of content is arguably also content marketing — it’s made to help sell newspapers and ad space.
