In 1st part of this 2-part series, we talked about

  • Why you need to make the email about them, not you
  • How to use a compelling subject line to generate insane response rates, and
  • What you achieve when you keep the email short and to the point

Here are the next 2 points that can massively and positively impact the response rates of your cold emails.

4. Include a Call To Action (CTA)

Your email has a certain goal, a certain objective, right?

What is it?

Do you want the recipient to download a book? Read a blog? Sign up for a course?

Different CTAs

Make it clear what you want the recipient to do next.

It could simply be ‘Continue reading’. Or it could be something that’s more involved, like “Yes! Sign me up for the webinar!”

Whatever it is, you want your recipient to know that.

A good CTA has the following three things:

  • It is easy to notice. Obviously you‘ll use color and all that stuff to make your CTA stand out.
  • It encourages quick action. Use some sort of urgency if possible, but push the recipient to take action. Check out the screenshot below.

  • It is simple . Nothing complex; keep it as simple as clicking the mouse. Check out how simple the below email is.

5. Follow up

In most cases, cold emails is a number game.

No, it’s not just about how many people you email to (thought that matter a lot too).

It’s also about how many emails you send as follow-ups.

If you don’t hear back from the recipient after your initial email, don’t be discouraged. It’s important to follow-up.

There’s no inviolable rule for the number of follow-ups. Different sales people give different numbers, but between 3 and 5 follow-up emails sounds like the most widely accepted answer (Source).

Here’s two more pieces of statistics you’ll find interesting (Source):

1. 60% of customers say no four times before saying yes

2. 48% of salespeople never even make a single follow up attempt

Now you know what separates the successful salespeople from the unsuccessful ones.

Summing up

There’s no single formula for guaranteed success for cold emails. But you’ve just learned the 5 key factors that hugely raise the response rates of cold emails.

Now that you know these secrets, which of them will you begin with?
