How to Survive Midterm Season
Midterm season always seems to creep up way too fast. One minute you’re reading course outlines and the next you’re face-to-face with 30% of your final grade.
It gets pretty stressful. Maybe you have too much on your plate. Or maybe your love for Netflix left you with half a semesters worth of material to learn in a week.
Either way I think we can all agree that we all dread midterm season.
With that in mind, we put some tips together to help you survive this year:
Give yourself a break.
This may seem like a bad idea at first, you probably think you don’t have a second to spare.
But, push yourself too hard and your brain will get fatigued which could end up being more counterproductive in the long-run.
So, every 60–90 minutes give yourself a 10 minute break. Walk around, make a coffee, do yoga, cry, whatever will help your brain reboot.
Get rid of all distractions.
Really can’t stress this one enough. Lets face it, we’re all hopelessly addicted to our phones/social media. That’s why, when it comes to studying we need to make a conscious effort to put these devices out of sight and out of mind, because we really can’t control ourselves.
- Go into a quiet area with the least distractions possible
- Put your phone on silent
- Listen to music to block out any other noise (instrumentals work well if lyrics distract you)
With all the little distractions out of the way you’ll be free to get the most out of your study session.
And it might be a little late for this last one but…
Give yourself enough time to study.
Chances are, if you’re reading in hopes of last minute tips, you’ve already messed this one up. But, for future reference, it’s important to plan ahead.
- Use a calendar
- Write which exams you have and when
- Put aside certain days for certain subjects
