I really like Medium, but I’m stuck with Wordpress

So, this is my first Medium post. I’ve really been wanting to do this, and now I’m here, at 12:30 a.m., Central Time on a November night.

I love it already. I just love the look and the feel of this site. Really, each word I write looks brilliant.

But I have a problem.

I’ve worked on Wordpress for the past three years on various blogs, posting memoirs, short stories and occasionally news features. After different wordpress.com sites, I finally decided to go for the domain name over the summer. And now I’m stuck with quinnwelsch.com (real creative, right?).

I want to be an innovative writer. I also want to be tech savvy. And really, in this day and age, the two practically have to go hand-in-hand — if you plan on making money, that is. But Medium is beautiful, and I want that too.

Maybe the answer is different for everyone, but the best advice I’ve seen came from a gentleman named David Parker on a Quibb forum last year.

Parker, a product manager at Facebook, writes:

“Should I ditch my domain name and just start writing on Medium? Or should I ignore the invitation from Medium and start posting on my own Wordpress blog?”

After some reflection and meandering, Parker gives us his answer:

No.

Wordpress might appear dated, it might look a little frumpy, but it’s trusty, reliable, and sure to stick. On the other hand, Medium could just be a fling.

Parker writes:

Despite all of Medium’s obvious benefits, I have this nagging sense that posting to my own blog might be better because doing so preserves flexibility

Maybe that’s not a very solid answer. But the only people who actually have a grounded answer are the people with a) too much money or b) too much time.

Of course, it’s never too late to experiment or try new things (just look at me now).

Hopefully Medium will suck me back in for another post. Until then, please enjoy this photo I took of a gorgeous beluga whale at the Vancouver Aquarium in British Columbia. Don’t ask too many questions.
