It must go beyond simply educating the flying public or being honest about the feelings and anxieties that flying provokes in us. In 1985, the average seat width for economy class flights (back then, it was first class and coach) was between 34–36" for domestic and international flights. Now, as of 2014, the average is between 31–32". Yes, our seats are getting smaller, and rather than waking up and demanding basic human comfort without paying an arm and a leg, we fell for people who are fat shamed who aren’t even fat! Seats are still getting smaller as airlines squeeze every dollar they can out of flights, and not only that, but we pay for services that used to be a given as complimentary. It’s time to hold the airlines responsible and only give our business to those who realize that humans are NOT sardines.
