In this verse Joshua has gathered all the tribes of Israel in Shechem, Canaan the first capital of the Kingdom of Israel. He asks the people to choose whom they will serve: the one true God of Israel or the many gods served by their those who lived before the flood and when the Israelites were in Egypt. Then Joshua’s quote “as for me and my house” asserts he and those with him will not waver in their devotion to the one almighty God.
