“Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison;”
— Isaac, Genesis 27:3
In this verse Isaac calls on his firstborn son Esau and tells him “I am old, I know not the day of my death”. He then tells Esau to go out and hunt for venison so that Isaac can bless Jacob with his birthright of inheritance.

Rebekah overhears them but wants her second-born son Jacob to have the birthright instead . So she plans an elaborate scheme for Jacob to pose as Esau and take the birthright from Esau.
After Esau goes out to hunt for the game, Rebekah tells Jacob to bring young goats from his flock. She prepares the goat to taste like the venison Isaac expects. Then Jacob poses as Esau and presents the meat and receives his father’s blessing. When Esau returns with his venison he find out that Jacob has stolen his birthright and blessing. Isaac does not reverse his decision to bless Jacob. He tells Esau he must serve Jacob. So Esau becomes angry and wants to kill Jacob. So Jacob flees to a relative in another area until Esau might forget the offense.
