“The Lord shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.”
— Moses, Exodus 14:14
In this verse, Moses encourages the Israelites to be brave escaping for freedom from their multi-generational bondage in Egypt. In the previous verse he tells them “Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever.”

Moses is reminding the Israelites, and us today, that God is fighting for us. So we can be at peace. One of the most searched versions of this verse is: “The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still” (NIV). Other versions use the verbs be ‘clam’, ‘silent’ and ‘quiet’. Whatever the translation, the point is that there is no need to be afraid. God is in control. We only need to have faith in God, trusting that He will fight for us to the very end. Then we may have the inner peace necessary to live well in an ever-changing world.
For a verse similar to this, see Psalm 46:10, “Be still, and know that I am God”.
