REVIEW: Falz — Jeje

After the success of his viral single, “Wehdone Sir”, Falz decided to rap about ditching his “Bahd Guy” persona for the “Baby Boy” one — a switch that clearly didn’t last too long, because he is back to rapping about love on his new single, “Jeje”.

The song was produced by the talented Studiomagic. We all know that Falz and Studiomagic are known to make magic as a duo and I was excited to see if Jeje would deliver.
As expected, Falz came through with the quality lyrics and wordplay. I appreciated the way Studiomagic played around with highlife beats. It’s an unlikely pairing with Falz’s signature rap but it all works really well together. Falz also delivered a catchy hook which, as we know, is a necessary part of the Nigerian song equation. Falz is proving more and more that he is a versatile and multi-talented artist. Jeje is definitely an easy-listening hit.
Now, onto the video, which was produced by Mex Films. I loved the incorporation of Ankara print clothing throughout the video. The visuals were crisp, colourful and African inspired.

“Jeje” is a beautifully shot three-minute love story, with little bits of humour sprinkled on for good measure — which shouldn’t be that surprising when the effortlessly funny Falz is involved.

From the beautiful dark-skinned actress to the market scene, it felt very fresh. The video is also a welcome departure from the usual club/twerk videos. And, of course, it wouldn’t be a Falz video if he did not incorporate his unique brand of humour into the video.

With “Jeje”, Falz completes his 2017 hat-trick of back-to-back bangers — which makes us incredibly excited for his next project. While his debut album, Stories That Touch, still has immense replay value — it’s just that great — it’s never too early to start itching for a sophomore album from this very gifted artiste.
