Boomers were the first generation that was not immediately superseded by a larger generation. In other words, Gen X was smaller, had fewer resources, less voting power, less spending power, etc. So the dominant generation for 40+ years was Boomers. Usually, every generation is forced to make compromises that you listed much sooner. As a more dominant generation comes up behind them, they lose voting power, spending power, cultural power much quicker. So the onset of a more dominant generation (Millennials) is something very new to a Boomer.
