When Ramadan Makes Sense

When you didn’t wake up and eat properly before sunrise…when you were out in the sun longer than you wanted to be…when it was one of those days that yeah, you were hungry, and thirsty, and tired and had a headache and weren’t able to get any work done…and when you counted the minutes and the time finally came to break fast when you thought it wouldn’t…

and at the moment the water hits your tongue like the greatest gift the universe could ever give you…and you instinctively think of every person in this world going thirsty tonight with no end in sight…and you hold back the tears because of how fortunate you are and how much they suffer…

when you’re brought face to face with your humanity and utter vulnerability and you give thanks…

That’s when this month of Ramadan. Of fasting, of humbling, of gratitude and concern for your fellow human…that’s when it makes a lot of sense.
