Hat or no Hat, Fung is Rhode Island’s Trump

PROVIDENCE, RI — During WPRI and Roger Williams University’s gubernatorial debate last week, Allan Fung told an elaborate story about his now infamous ‘Trump’ beanie — but the facts speak for themselves, hat or no hat, Fung is Rhode Island’s Trump.

“They say a picture is worth a thousand words and Fung, grinning, in a Trump hat at Trump’s inauguration giving a big thumbs up does not exactly say ‘I was just supporting a hat vendor,’” said Emily Samsel, Communications Director for the Rhode Island Democratic Party, “Rhode Island needs a Governor who will stand up to Trump and stand up for Rhode Island — Gina Raimondo has proven time and again she will stand up for us, Allan Fung has not.”

Fung supported Trump’s candidacy during the 2016 elections and continues to support Trump now. When Trump tried to take away Rhode Islanders’ health care, Fung was silent. When Trump attacked the Dreamers, Fung did not oppose. And, in the wake of horrific mass shootings, when Trump refused to act and make our communities safer, Fung agreed — he even opposed Governor Raimondo’s common-sense ‘Red Flag’ policy.

BACKGROUND:

Fung proudly supported Trump’s candidacy during the 2016 election and was excited to attend Trump’s inauguration.

Fung continues to support Trump now.

Asked to give Trump a letter grade, Fung said, “I would say probably a B. I think he’s done a good job with the economy.” [WPRI, 9/11/18]

President Trump’s former White House press secretary “[Sean] Spicer praised Fung during morning radio appearances and tweeted his support, as well.” [WPRI, 9/11/18]

When Trump tried to take away Rhode Islanders’ health care, Fung was silent.

“U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced late last week the administration is reversing its legal position in a case challenging the law, often called Obamacare. Rather than continuing the Obama administration’s defense of the law, Sessions’ lawyers will now back Texas and other states in seeking to eliminate the individual mandate as well as the guarantee that insurers sell to individuals with pre-existing conditions. Rhode Island is one of 15 states that have been defending the law after Attorney General Peter Kilmartin joined California in support of it, and Raimondo highlighted her continued backing for its provisions at an event Tuesday morning. […] Fung’s spokesman has not yet responded to a question about his position regarding the Affordable Care Act lawsuit. He has previously said he does not support the health law.” [WPRI, 6/12/18]

When Trump attacked the Dreamers, Fung did not oppose.

“While Rhode Island’s Democratic delegation and other state leaders blasted President Donald Trump’s administration on Tuesday for rescinding DACA — the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy created by former President Barack Obama — potential Rhode Island Republican gubernatorial candidates stood by Trump’s decision. Cranston Republican Mayor and former Gubernatorial candidate Allan Fung, however, did not respond to request for comment on the move by Trump to reverse the executive order put forth by Obama, to provide legal protections to those immigrant children brought into the country illegally by their parents.” [9/6/17, GoLocalProv]

When Trump refused to act and make our communities safer following mass shootings, Fung agreed.

Allan Fung had an ‘A’ rating from the NRA in 2018. [NRA-PVF, accessed 8/29/18]

“Fung was the National Rifle Association’s endorsed candidate for governor in 2014, and he indicated Monday he would welcome the NRA’s support again this year. ‘My positions are my positions, and people support me because of my positions,’ he said. ‘I also haven’t hidden this: I do shoot recreationally. And if different groups, different individuals, want to support me, I’m proud to take their support.’” [WPRI, 2/26/18]

“While Cranston Mayor Allan Fung chose to remain silent, the other candidates in the 2018 Rhode Island race for governor talked about guns Monday and — no surprise — there is a deep divide between them and Gov. Gina Raimondo. Less than a week after 17 people were shot to death in a Florida high school by a gunman with an AR-15 semi-automatic weapon, Raimondo said she unequivocally supports the passage, by state lawmakers, of several more gun-control measures.” [Providence Journal, 2/19/18]
