An unfortunate time for a homeless person to ask for money.
On my ride to work on New York City’s wonderful MTA subway system, a lady walks in and makes a public announcement.
In 30 seconds, she shared a brief story:
She was a single mother raising 2 girls and was almost beaten to death by her ex-husband. She had 8 surgeries and as a result, cannot work. She chose being poor in exchange for the right to live safely with her daughters.
She wanted anything: words of encouragement, money, or even a subway card.
I watched as people spare a few coins, a few dollars, and words of encouragement for this lady.
As the train stopped at the next station, the lady walks out and a homeless gentleman walks in holding a coffee cup full of coins.
In 30 seconds, he shared a brief story:
Ladies and Gentleman, can you spare a few coins & dollars, I am hungry etc. Anything will help, God Bless you.
I watched no one gave an ounce of sympathy for this gentleman.
I thought to myself, this is the worst time to be asking for money, since he had no compelling story. #FeelsBadMan
