The First Step

A lot of people have been asking me what I’ve been up to recently. I have been #ZeroDarkThirty searching for that perfect job.

Just last year I had the fortunate experience of interning with a Fortune 500 company. It was one of the hardest decisions of my life to decide if the job was the right fit for me. Constantly weighing the pros and cons, my heart wasn’t in it and the decision was made that I wouldn’t be given the job.

Throughout the year, I have shared my story and many people have told me, “sometimes you have to settle for any job.” Other times, professors were perplexed when I told them I didn’t just want to be a software engineer. I wanted to be a UI/UX designer or even leverage my marketing skills in a future position.

Don’t settle. If you know what you want, stay hungry. If you get rejected 33 times, reeveluate your strategy and figure out another way. Explore other avenues and never give in until you exhausted all of your opportunities.

After one week in the heart of New York City, I believe I have found a home with @PaperFreeNow. Located in the Techstars office, I am surrounded by amazing talent and people striving to grow their startups into success stories.

Hired as a Social Media Intern, I have had the opportunity to wear multiple hats. Every day is a new adventure — whether I need to be a design guru, marketing ninja, or growth hacker, I am growing myself along with the company.

To my 6th grade teacher who taught me the meaning of perseverance, thank you. One of his favorite quotations:

So be sure when you step, Step with care and great tact. And remember that life’s A Great Balancing Act. And will you succeed? Yes! You will, indeed! (98 and ¾ percent guaranteed) Kid, you’ll move mountains.”
Dr. Seuss, Oh, The Places You’ll Go!
