Of course the problem with this article is ignores the history of the Democratic party. It is the 3rd way founded in part by Clinton that is the radical ideological element of the party.

The third way took over the party promising to cater to the racial prejudices of suburban white voters. It promised to move beyond benign neglect of Persons of Color in the party to active punishing through welfare reform. Clinton also used a highly scripted attack on Sister Souljah to essentially assure suburban whites that it was only on the side of "Good" African Americans.

While racism was its method of seizing control of the party. The 3rd way political movement had at its heart anti-labor reforms. Sometimes mistaken for being a pro-market political faction the 3rd way political movement is not pro-market. A pro-market movement would be neutral between labor and capital. 3rd way political movements on the other hand are aggressively anti-labor.

The eight year war on teacher's unions fought by the Obama administration reduced significantly union density as American labor was at its weakest point. Conservatives were quite forthright in stating their plan was to destroy teachers unions, pass right to work, and win the midwest. This is exactly what transpired.

Another deviation from market principles is the 3rd way approach to the ACA. ACA encourages high deductible and high copay insurance plans. Importantly it attempted to force unions to renegotiate contracts during the weakest point for labor in generations. Nominally high deductibles and high copay policies reduce costs by allowing customers to shop for lower price care. In reality with asymmetric information between doctors and patients, inability to time shift, and local monopolies, health care is basically the platonic ideal of a non-functioning market. So while ACA reforms pretended to be pro-market they were in fact anti-worker ideologically driven anti-market reforms.

The third way is a deeply radical political movement that has decimated center left parties around the world. It has consistently sought to favor capital at the expense of labor. Traditional Democrats aren't alt-left. They are FDR and LBJ Democrats who want to save the party from radical ideologues and return to evidence based policies which do not favor capital at the expense of labor.
