The following LEAD (Love, Effort, Attitude, Discipline) blog uses the book, “10 Minute Toughness” by Dr. Jason Selk (Director of Mental Training for the St Louis Cardinals) to help coaches, athletes or any individual who desires to utilize effective goal setting to achieve peak performance.

Product goals are result-oriented goals that are clearly measurable. Examples of product goals include:

  1. Score at least 12 points per game.
  2. Grade out at least 85% for the game.
  3. Rush for at least 125 yards per game.

Process goals are specifically “how” or “ways” in which you can achieve your product goals. Examples of process goals include:

  1. Aggressively drive to the basket (withing five feet) at least 6 times per game.
  2. Be mentally prepared for each game with a 100% grasp of the playbook. I will focus on the here and now and execute my job with perfect technique.
  3. Before each snap I will say to myself, “I will see the holes with low pad level and drive my legs.

Product goals should be set before and after competition and process goals should be utilized during practices and competition. It is important for you to write down your goals and also to let others know of your intentions. Writing down and talking about your goals makes you more accountable for your daily actions.
