In his State of the Union address last month, President Barack Obama announced the Cancer Moon Shot , a massive initiative to wipe out cancer to be led by Vice President Joe Biden. Our company, R.M. Hoffman, has been involved in our own small way in a state-of-the-art anti-cancer initiative with Varian Medical Systems, inventor, developer and world leader in life-saving proton beam radiation technology. Between operational developments like Varian’s and the administration’s new initiative, I think we are seeing light in the very dark tunnel of cancer.

Let me give you an example. It’s one that both shows and tells just how sophisticated and superb cancer treatment has become. The new cancer moon shot initiative is only going to accelerate life-saving therapies like the one I want to show you. Here is a Varian Medical Systems video from the Scripps Proton Therapy Center (San Diego, CA). When you watch this — highly recommended — a small but significant portion of the system you’ll see is supplied by Hoffman. We are indeed honored and humbled to be partnered in this endeavor with many other vendors:

When you consider the Cyclotron needed to produce the proton beam and the motion control involved with extremely precise beam movement and accurate patient positioning, it’s not possible to doubt mankind’s resolve to eradicate cancer in our lifetimes. Thanks, Varian. And thanks to Joe Biden for taking the helm of mission control for the new Moon Shot.
