Block Party
The sun was shining one bright summer day and everyone was looking forward to the yearly event later that evening. Back in my elementary school days everyone got together for a massive idyllic block party that allowed everyone to meet and connect with their neighbors. Food was plentiful and tasty, for everyone was encouraged to bring their own dish of food. Juicy Hamburgers were cooked on the grill while the kids played in the front of back yards of people’s well-groomed houses. As far as entertainment goes, the neighborhood board of directors rent blow-up houses, corn hole games, and badminton nets for the evening.
Since then our neighborhood has ditched the block party idea due to a low turnout rate and onerous neighborhood court cases. After a number of years it was unclear whether the neighborhood would ever have another gathering. Yet recently, our first block party in years shows just how much people liked the idea. Being hosted in someone’s garage, the block party had a large turnout of a lot of familiar faces. What made this year different than any other year was the three new families who moved to our neighborhood. Nobody knows if this will continue for more years, but we will not be mad if it does.
