From Little Kids, Big UpLovers Grow…

What you learn in youth shapes the adult to come; the values, worldviews, beliefs and habits formed early in life can mean you have a life of care, consideration, curiosity, and creativity, or one of apathy, disinterest and destruction.
The UpLovers are promoting the former rather than the latter.
We think that what is missing in the world right now is a bit of love.
Love for our planet, love for our work, love for ourselves and love for our ‘stuff’.
Yeah, ‘stuff’ — the things that we carry with us in life, and too easily cast away as trash to be dealt with by ‘someone else’.
The UpLovers are all about loving ‘stuff’ again, and this past week we had an opportunity to communicate this love of ‘stuff’ to another generation through a fantastic Soft Toy Making Workshop with the very talented and wonderful Erin Lewis Fitzgerald at the Green Community Garden in Tuncurry.

Being the school holidays and all that, we figured that mums and dads out there might have been interested in having their kids do something a little different for a change.

So we got Erin to travel up to our home in Tuncurry (from Melbourne) and teach some kids how to turn scraps of textile into unique and wonderful toys for them to take home or give to a friend.
The first step in this process was to tap the creativity of the young ones and have them draw what they wanted to created on paper.

Once the wackiest creations you have ever likely seen were put to paper, the next step was to get a hold of some materials and bring out the sewing machine to add a bit of technology to the creative mix…

Seeing the creations come to a life was such a thrill for everyone involved and Erin’s glow and charm kept everyone in a great mood as the workshop progressed.
It was great to see the kids using their creativity and imaginations to make something unique from the scraps of something that was once more common or mundane.
The amazing creations speak for themselves. Have a look!

And it wasn’t only little kids that participated, it should be added. Some ‘big’ kids managed to sneak into the workshop too.

All in all, it was a fantastic experience for everyone to have Erin come to our little oasis in the Tuncurry Tip to teach us all a few things about loving the ‘stuff’ in our lives again.
Thank you Erin for being so wonderful!
If you loved this story, why not share it, and book in for one of our next workshops at the Green in Tuncurry?
