It doesn’t take a study to figure this out. Just be poor for awhile and you’ll see for yourself. Anxiety and fear take their toll. You make poor decisions and have to fight depression. You can become irritable and take up bad habits to try to ease the discomfort. It’s compounded if you’ve always been poor and don’t have a history of at least some success to look back on and strive for in the future. Imagine what it’s like for those who have been in poverty for generations. No pep talk is going to convince you that you can rise out of poverty. Sure, there are a few exceptions, but they are in the minority and using them as examples is misleading.
