The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is an American multi-media franchise (of comic books, short films, television series, and digital series) and shared universe that is centred on a series of superhero films, independently produced by Marvel Studios and based on characters that appear in American comic books published by Marvel Comics.

The first film released in the MCU was Iron Man (2008), which began the first phase of films culminating in the crossover film Marvel’s The Avengers (2012). Phase Two began with Iron Man 3 (2013) and concluded with Ant-Man (2015). The films are currently in Phase Three, which began with the release of Captain America: Civil War (2016).

Marvel Television expanded the universe further, first to network television with Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC in 2013–14 television season, followed by online streaming with Marvel’s Daredevil on Netflix in 2015 and Marvel’s Runaways on Hulu in 2017, and then to cable television with Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger in 2018 on Freeform.

Why is Marvel Studio and Marvel Cinematic Universe Trending?

In a recent interview given to Vanity Fair, the first Iron Man — director Jon Favreau, star Robert Downey Jr., and the studio’s original head, Avi Arad were nostalgic and discussing how the Superhero franchise of Iron Man, Thor and others became so famous and how nine years and 16 movies since that first Marvel Studios effort has been passed so far.

Marvel has already released or plotted out 22 MCU films, from Iron Man through to the end of the studio’s “Phase Three” arc, which wraps with a fourth and supposedly final Avengers film in 2019, closing out the Infinity War story. But according to Feige, “we’ve got another 20 movies on the docket that are completely different from anything that’s come before — intentionally.” Disney CEO Bob Iger seems to agree, noting in the same piece that Marvel owns the rights to 7,000 characters, with the implication that the company means to use them.

The future

The year 2018 will see Chadwick Boseman debut in his stand-alone film Black Panther, which hits theatres on 16 February. And much more interesting characters gonna come.
