The Penultimate Act

The wonder and awe of Philippians Two

The purpose of God and what He would do.

God incarnate, a most glorious fact

The One who had all now intentionally lacked.

Stewarding a lifetime of infinite ability

He marched toward sacrificial death in humility.

He went to war as a servant, our conquering King

Gaining victory over death, and soon every thing.

The depths of our hearts cry “Let the new age begin”

When He will perform the penultimate act again

For there was a moment before waging war in the grave

Before the torture, the garden, and the ultimate trade.

He knew of the feast and the glory to come

He knew of the war and the victory won.

He knew where He came from and where He would go

So He was free to keep serving, the love of His Father to show.

Love and service He did, all the way to the end.

And taking a towel after calling the boys ‘friend,’

Gave water abundant, bringing refreshment, relief

To limbs weary from work and zealous belief.

As He rose, He stooped, and chose what no man would choose

And we gain in this picture what we never can lose.

The love of our King, who will stoop yet again

Serving His bride as the marriage begins.

For the blessing of others, indeed yourself too

Your life and your family and all you will do

For the sake of God’s glory, what this life is about

The best way to live… will you pour yourself out?

Are you self-reliant or do you see your need?

On who do you depend, on what bread do you feed?

Upon His words and His life will you meditate and read?

Will you die too? Will you follow His lead?
