Consistency & Awareness are Key

The image above holds the importance of the 3 R’s to maintaining a habit: Reminder to start the new habit in our lives, the Routine of making sure we do the activity required and Reward, positive affirmation that we link to the habit activity is essential in maintaining that we undertake the cycle again. Most people seem to know the importance of habit and even the 3 R’s Cycle. So where do so many fail in achieving their goal of a good habit creation?
Consistency is the key, especially in developing habits and those we consciously choose to serve us in our endeavours. We are a result of the habits we live by. Reminding ourselves of the Power of Habit is especially important. Many different thought leaders, including Transcendentalist Ralph Waldo Emerson, Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu, supermarket magnate Frank Outlaw, spiritual teacher Gautama Buddha, and even the father of Margaret Thatcher have been attributed with the following saying:
‘Watch your thoughts. They become words. Watch your words. They become deeds. Watch your deeds. They become habits. Watch your habits. They become character. Character is everything.’
So few of us give awareness to the truth around what we do on a daily basis, it is part of the unconscious, the 90%+ Conditioned habit that we no longer think of. This is why a lot of New Year Resolutions fall short. People see the results they want to achieve, are aware of those that live the habit and get the results they want but when it comes to themselves they usually apportion the work necessary as a unique activity in a single point in time. They go by how they ‘feel’ as to whether they will take that single action. This is usually full of gusto for the first few days if making a Resolution and then by the 4th or 5th day of venturing out in the cold for the gym session they decide they just no longer feel like it. And there the birth of a newly rewarding habit usually dies.
When we truly Commit to achieving a goal then the surrounding obstacles and easy excuses fall away. When it’s sunny we’re doing our running, when it’s raining out, we are doing our running in a wind-breaker or equivalent. The key to commuting is making that Result a must. A daily habit that happens no matter what! Just like a baby that requires nurturing we don’t allow anything in the way of getting it fed. The shops weren’t open, I’ll ring my family. Oh the family’s not in, ‘sorry honey, no food today…’ just isn’t an option! Instead we always, always find a way. Neighbours, gas stations, strangers, the food will be found every single day. And so just as a baby doesn’t go without the habits that serve us best do not either! Nurture them with this level of consistency and commitment and you’ll always bring up habits big and strong that will serve you for life.
