Self-awareness is sadly in Short Supply!

How often have you seen this? The stage is set, the judges are waiting in anticipation, the intro video has been shown and the contestant walks out to speak briefly about themselves and their passion before singing in front of the largest number audience that they could ever imagine. This is their childhood dream. This is the moment they’ve been waiting for. And then it turn out they suck! This is the commonly enjoyed ‘early stage’ of X Factor. A place where the lack of self-awareness and the semblance of realisation comes over the faces of wannabe performers who believed they would be the next Cheryl Cole. Unfortunately, few actually are and even fewer get the chance to ever get that shot. The lack of self-awareness is something that the viewing audience finds hilarious and yet few realiser that good humour is the self-ego commonly recognising its own limitations.

If people could be given self-awareness then there would be a lot more wealth in the world and that wealth would start within themselves.

True wealth is a life of purposeful living, tapping into your gifts in life and making a contribution that those around you and society values. This can only come from knowing a) what your gifts in life are and b) spending the appropriate amount of time harnessing, cultivating and sharing those gifts with the world. It is said that when you love what you do it will never ‘be’ work for you. I am sure that people believe that it is not ‘work’ in the ‘traditional sense’ for Lebron to play basketball and yet there is no doubt he has put a lot of work into being one of the Greats in game! It is not because the world frames it as a game that we all recognise the play element in the freedom which Lebron may live his life. Warren Buffet, Oprah Winfrey and Richard Branson, if questioned, would too view what they do as ‘play’ not a chore.

The truth is that you have to put a lot of focused effort and hours into your craft regardless. If the majority of people were to do so in basketball they would achieve nowhere near that of Lebron’s success and the same may go for singing, acting, business, etc. But anyone of these areas may actually be your gift, your unique ability to just do! When we have self-awareness we can achieve our Lebron level on our area of greatness. Or maybe, there is another up-shoot: we can achieve just as high a feeling of achievement without even having to be as great in a different industry. At the end of the day, the only competitor to your greatness is that person staring back at you in the mirror. So get real, honest, ask others where necessary and find out: What am I truly great at?

Thanks so much for reading! If you enjoyed it, would mean a lot to me if you hit that heart button below. That way more people can see the story. :)
